Act 2 Scene Too-Much: Fishmongers, Theater Kids & The Play’s the Thing— Hamlet Act 2, Scene 2

from Whine with Some Cheese · host Michael Seong

We have boundaries, and one of them is: no literature longer than a relationship that survived Tulum. Unfortunately, Shakespeare didn’t care. Welcome to Hamlet, Act 2 Scene 2, twenty-seven pages of court bureaucracy, spying, and theater discourse that should’ve been an email.Claudius and Gertrude summon Rosencrantz and Guildenstern like they’re ordering Postmates and ask them to spy on Hamlet. Polonius storms in announcing Norway news like he’s carrying nuclear codes, then claims he’s found “the very cause” of Hamlet’s madness, before delivering a speech so long it violates international law. He reads Hamlet’s love letter to Ophelia (without consent), criticizes the phrasing mid-read, and somehow still expects applause for being “brief.”Then Hamlet appears, roasts Polonius (hello, “fishmonger”), sniffs out the spy mission, and spirals into existential content: Denmark is a prison, the world is a sterile promontory, and “What a piece of work is man” ends in pure nihilism. Finally, the Players arrive, complete with trumpet-level extra energy, Hamlet demands a gory speech about Pyrrhus and Hecuba, Polonius has the nerve to call it “too long,” and Hamlet closes with the first actual plan we’ve heard all play:“The play’s the thing / Wherein I’ll catch the conscience of the King.”We whine about:Surveillance culture, guilt-face friends, and forced emotional laborPolonius praising “brevity” while doing the oppositeHamlet’s toxic-positivity philosophy pivot and seasonal-depression monologuesTheater kids, actor drama, and gratuitous trumpet entrancesTwenty-seven pages to arrive at one usable planPour the matcha, cut the cheese, and invoice Shakespeare for your time, because this scene absolutely should’ve been a group text.
