Most people try to help when a friend or family member is sick or injured, but it may feel complicated when the illness is addiction. Addiction is one of the most common preventable diseases in the U.S., says Dr. Hastings-Spaine, and in some cases, addiction may be related to someone “self-medicating” to cope with another illness. If you’re concerned about someone, she says you should let them know you care but carefully avoid being judgmental.
