Addiction is something we don’t often talk about, but as we’re about to find out, the issue is a very real one in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula. Over the next 13 episodes of Portage Health Foundation’s Addiction Series, we’ll talk about what addiction is, how it happens, the many effects it has on the person, their friends and family, and the community as a whole. We’ll also talk about what’s being done to address it, offer solutions for those who are struggling or know someone who is, and we’ll help you better understand what you can do to help. In this first episode, we’ll hear from the Portage Health Foundation’s Executive Director Kevin Store, and the chairperson for the Foundation Bernadette Yeoman-Ouellette. We’ll also hear from Rebecca Crane, executive director at Dial Help on how this problem has evolved in the last decade. Highlights from Episode 1 Rebecca Crane, Dial Help “In 2017 we had over 1,500 calls related to substance abuse or alcohol.” Suicide calls to Dial Help in 2017 made up 13 percent of their calls after being only 2 percent in prior years. “The problems are only getting deeper.” “The community has to come together. Everybody needs to have of a role together otherwise it will only escalate.” Kevin Store, PHF Executive Director “The financial implications that addiction has on our community is actually quite overwhelming.” “We have a real issue. Virtually all aspects of our community are affected. This is our problem.” Bernadette Yeoman-Ouellette, PHF Board Chair “Addiction kills more people than auto accidents and gun homicides combined in this country. Being in a rural community, we’re not immune to the problem, we have higher rates of addiction per capita than metro areas.” “We can’t hide from this issue anymore. We have to confront it. We have to work together as a community to address it. Until we do that, it’s only going to continue to expand in our community and take much more of a toll on our community.” Thank you to Kevin, Bernadette and Rebecca for sharing your experiences with this serious issue. We hope you found the first of 13 episodes in the Portage Health Foundation’s Addiction Series to be enlightening. Looking Ahead - In the next episode we’ll meet a former addict and talk with two service providers in our area about how addiction is a disease that affects the brain of those suffering from it. Rags To Riches with Matt Cooper Matt Cooper Hosted by Real Estate Entrepreneur, Matt Cooper, the Rags To Riches Podcast shares inspiring stories from some of the world’s most relentless influencers, entrepreneurs, and experts. Find out what it really takes to make it BIG as an Entrepreneur regardless of how young you may be. Tune in each week for a new episode on Rags To Riches! Adventure of the Copper Beeches, The by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) LibriVox A governess comes to Sherlock Holmes for advice on an offer of a excellent position with a new employer. But the conditions are odd and expectations strange. What is behind the smiling demeanor of the owner of the Copper Beeches house? Sherlock and Dr. Watson are happy to help this lady with her conundrum and save lives as a consequence. Songs of Innocence and Experience by William Blake Loyal Books “Tiger, tiger, burning bright/In the forests of the night/ What immortal hand or eye/ Could frame thy fearful symmetry?” These often quoted lines are part of The Tiger in William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience. In 1789, William Blake released a limited edition of the book. Being a gifted artist, poet and printmaker, he undertook to personally publish all his work himself through a very painstaking but highly artistic process of etching, thereby transferring his drawings and poems individually onto copper plates by hand. He himself inked each plate and printed each individual page, hand painted the illustrations and bound the pages to create each single volume. As this was extremely laborious and time consuming, there were very few editions of each book.Blake's works pose an unusual problem. Since he displays both his art and his literary skills together and himself considered them inseparable, it was not easy to review his books as literature or art alone. Additionally, h In the Land of Cave and Cliff Dwellers by Frederick Schwatka (1849 - 1892) LibriVox An adventurer and explorer of no mean repute, Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka leads an expedition by mule train into the forbidding Sierra Madre mountains of Mexico to one of the richest silver mining regions in the world. He offers lively (and occasionally disparaging) descriptions of the the unfamiliar flora and fauna of this often desolate region, of the cliff and cave dwellings inhabited and abandoned, and of the social customs of the various peoples he meets. He marvels at the unmatched running prowess of the Rarámuri (Tarahumari) Indians of the Barranca del Cobre--the famous Copper Canyon of Chihuahua State. He writes always with humor that keeps the narrative light and the reader smiling. (Summary by Steven Seitel)
