ADHD, Dopamine & Regulation: Nutrition and Somatics Beyond the Label | Luis Mojica

from Rooted & Wild · host Henry Hawk

What if some of what we call ADHD could be explored not only through a diagnostic label, but through the body, nervous system, nutrition, and our relationship with stimulation? In this episode of Rooted & Wild, I’m joined by Luis Mojica, somatic educator, nutritionist, founder of Holistic Life Navigation, and author of Food Therapy: Conscious Eating to Navigate Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma, for a fascinating conversation about ADHD, dopamine, food, and nervous system regulation.Luis brings a particularly personal perspective to this conversation. He has spoken openly about living with an ADHD diagnosis and how his symptoms seemed to shift depending on what he ate. His exploration eventually brought together two areas that are often discussed separately: nutrition and somatics. Rather than reducing ADHD to a single explanation or suggesting that nutrition replaces appropriate medical care, we explore a broader question: What else might the body be telling us?Luis shares his perspective on how nourishment can influence energy, stress responses, glucose balance, and the nervous system, while somatic practices can help us become more conscious of sensations, impulses, activation, and the ways we seek regulation. His larger body of work integrates whole-food nutrition, somatic practices, and self-inquiry as tools for understanding the relationship between the body and stress. We also explore dopamine and our attraction to stimulation, what cravings may communicate, the difference between judging a behavior and becoming curious about it, and how learning to listen to the body can change our relationship with the very symptoms we’ve been taught simply to suppress. This isn't a conversation about denying ADHD or replacing the label with another one. It’s an invitation to look beyond the label and become curious about the whole human being living underneath it.In this episode, we explore:• ADHD through the lens of the body and nervous system• Luis’s personal experience with an ADHD diagnosis• Dopamine, stimulation, and regulation• Why we may continually seek stimulation• The relationship between food, energy, and attention• Blood sugar, glucose balance, and the nervous system• Stress hormones and states of activation• How nutrition can influence how we feel in our bodies• Cravings as information rather than moral failures• The difference between stimulation and nourishment• Somatic awareness and learning to witness what is happening inside us• Stress, trauma, and patterns of dysregulation• Moving away from shame and toward curiosity• Why the same behavior may serve different purposes in different people• Building a more conscious relationship with food and the body• Looking beyond a diagnosis without dismissing its value• What regulation can look like in everyday lifeAbout Luis MojicaLuis Mojica is a somatic educator, nutritionist, founder of Holistic Life Navigation, and author of Food Therapy: Conscious Eating to Navigate Anxiety, Stress, and Trauma. His work brings together somatic practices, nutrition, and self-inquiry to help people better understand their bodies and their responses to stress and trauma. Drawing in part from his own experiences, Luis teaches people to become more curious about sensation, nourishment, stress responses, and the ways the body attempts to protect and regulate itself. Through Holistic Life Navigation, Luis teaches internationally through courses, workshops, retreats, speaking engagements, and his podcast. His work encourages a shift away from fighting the body and toward developing a more conscious, compassionate relationship with it. Connect with Luis MojicaWebsite: HolisticLifeNavigation.comInstagram: @holistic.life.navigationBook: Food Therapy: Conscious Eating to Navigate Anxiety, Stress, and TraumaRooted & Wild provides general information for educational and informational purposes only.
