Adult ADHD in Women: Late Diagnosis, Perimenopause, Executive Dysfunction & Finally Getting Help

from Steel Roses Podcast · host Jenny Benitez

Send us Fan MailWhat does adult ADHD in women actually look like when you’ve spent your whole life appearing organized, successful, and completely “fine”?In this episode of Steel Roses, we talk about the surprising path to a late ADHD diagnosis—and how getting our children evaluated for ADHD led to an uncomfortable realization: many of the symptoms being discussed sounded incredibly familiar. We unpack the ADHD symptoms women often miss or learn to compensate for, including inattention, executive dysfunction, procrastination, overwhelm, internal restlessness, emotional reactivity, difficulty with multi-step tasks, forgetfulness, and hyperfocus. We also talk about what it feels like to have a brain running 30 tabs at once while everyone around you thinks you have everything under control. Why can you spend hours completely absorbed in something interesting but struggle to start one simple, boring task? Why do deadlines suddenly unlock your ability to focus? Why do you reread the same paragraph multiple times, forget what someone just told you, or rely heavily on calendars, alarms, lists, and routines just to stay on top of everyday life?We also challenge one of the biggest misconceptions about ADHD in adult women: that doing well in school, building a career, raising a family, or being highly organized means you cannot have ADHD. For many women, those achievements may actually hide years of compensating, masking, and working significantly harder just to keep up.Then we dive into the connection between ADHD and perimenopause. Hormonal shifts, sleep changes, brain fog, and increasing demands during midlife can make previously manageable ADHD symptoms much harder to compensate for—sometimes leading women to finally seek an evaluation in their 30s, 40s, or beyond. We share the experience of pursuing an ADHD evaluation, receiving a diagnosis, advocating for care, and beginning treatment with extended-release Adderall (Adderall XR). We talk candidly about the early experience of ADHD medication, including timing, caffeine, food, appetite, sleep, and what it can feel like when the mental fog finally starts to lift. Most importantly, this episode is about self-advocacy.If you’ve spent years wondering why everyday tasks seem harder for you than they do for everyone else, why motherhood has made the mental load feel impossible, or why your usual coping strategies suddenly stopped working during perimenopause, this conversation may feel very familiar.A late ADHD diagnosis does not mean ADHD suddenly appeared. Sometimes it means you finally have language for something you’ve been managing your entire life.Subscribe to Steel Roses, share this episode with a woman who might recognize herself in it, and leave a review telling us:What was your biggest “wait…that’s me” moment?Support the showLove this content?
