Advent — The Advent of Joy
from LifeWell Messages
The angels' announcement to the shepherds in Luke 2 is “good news that will cause great joy for all people.” This message draws a careful line between joy and happiness: happiness depends on circumstances, joy depends on a Savior. Joy is defined as receiving what we truly need — not a gift that fades, but forgiveness. Sin can be momentarily fun, which is why God is less concerned with our happiness than our holiness; holiness draws us nearer to him, and nearness is where joy endures even in trial. Anchored in Romans 15:13 and Psalm 16:11 , the arc moves from the manger's humility — a King for all people — to a closing claim from James 1 : trials can be met with pure joy, not because we are glad of them, but because of who God is through them.
