Advice for Fitness Coaches

from The Journey with Zakk Colburn · host Zakk Colburn

Brand new fitness coaches here is some big brother advice from someone who has started multiple businesses from scratch multiple times. My first piece of advice is to be patient, making a successful business takes time. If you are just starting out you have a few years till you will have that fully functioning, paying business. I have a rule of four years, I used this in my personal fitness journey and I am using it in my business now as well and so should you. Give yourself four years of consistent hard dedication to your craft to make sure your business will be successful. If you do this, it will change your life. The next tip I have for you is to remove your ego, your business is not your identity. This is a crippling thing new coaches do, if you tie your business into your ego you will be on a roller coaster of emotions. Your worth of being a coach is not directly tied to how your business performs. Tip number three, ask a lot of questions. There are other coaches who are doing more things than you, doing things better than you and have more time in this industry than you. So if you see someone doing something that you like and you would like to know more about it, ask them. It costs nothing and it can radically change your life. Step four is to find yourself a mentor, this can be a business mentor or another fitness coach to coach you. But having someone in your corner who will hold you accountable is what will make or break your career. The last and most important tip is, do NOT compare yourself to others. Everyone is on their own journey, compare yourself to yourself a month(s) ago. As long as you compare yourself to yourself you will always see progress.
