AFL Legend Ron Mix with Bob!

from Babbitville Radio

Ron Mix was the second AFL player to be inducted itno the Pro Football Hall of Fame behind his San Diego Charger teammate Lance Alworth. Now 81 year old, the man they called 'The Intellectual Assassin' was called for holding only two times in his ten year career and, believe it or not, when he started weight lifting in high school and then at USC, coaches were against it. They thought weight lifting would make the players inflexible and muscle bound. At the 1965 AFL All-Star Game scheduled to be held in New Orleans, a contingent of African American players threatened to boycott the game because of the discrimination they faced there leading into the game. Ron Mix was the first white player to join in the boycott and the game was evenutally moved to Houston. The Chargers retired his jersey...then, after he was traded to the Raiders, the owner of the team Gene Klein un-retired his jersey. NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle had the Chargers then re-retire his jersey.......but later on they un-retired it again. The first two AFL Players to be inducted into the Pro Football HOF were Lance Alworth and then Ron Mix, Ironic that the first two AFL Players to go in were both Chargers and that one of those guys doesn't even have his jersey retired by the Chargers!! This was a fascinating interview with a true football legend! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
