My name is @shemjosh, and I'll be performing a Gbagyi folk song titled "Toya Ga Akuta Mwamwan." The Gbagyi tribe is one of the Nigerian languages predominantly found in the North Central (Middle Belt) region. As a native of Gbagyi, I can attest that music, including folk music, is an integral part of our identity and storytelling. Growing up in a Christian community, I was raised to sing songs that edified and glorified God. "Toya Ga Akuta Mwamwan," which translates to "We shouldn't honor stones as gods," is a call-and-response song that emphasizes the importance of worshiping God alone. The lyrics affirm that Jesus is sufficient and that we shouldn't worship creations like stones, trees, or mountains. The melody has a soothing effect that resonates deeply within our hearts, reaffirming our faith in Jesus as our sole savior.
