Africa Day – The Present and the future of Afro Beats in Africa and Globally

To celebrate our beautiful continent on this day, Smash had a conversation talking about one of Africa’s biggest exports – Afro beats. The musical genre Afro beat originated in the 1960s and 1970s as a blend of traditional Yoruba music with jazz, West African highlife and funk. The pioneering style of afrobeat is identified with artists like the formidable Nigerian icon Fela Kuti. Now, Afro beat and Afro beats are not the same thing, and there’s a difference. Smash was joined by two people who helped him navigate through this conversation – mix DJ and In The Mix resident Kat Upendi & as well as Nigerian musician Wurld.
