African Union Chairmanship

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is set to take over the chairmanship of the African Union for the year 2020, replacing Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi who chaired the organization through 2019. In his address Ramaphosa said South Africa will use its chairmanship of the African Union to promote the economic empowerment of women. He further said African nations needed to acknowledge that there were too few women in some industries, notably science, and that equal pay for equal work was not adequately respected and women still held lower paid and lower skilled jobs than men. 1.
