Hello and welcome to the Raw Impressions podcast. Please enjoy its locally global focus. There are so many reasons to love the podcast. Why it was nominated for five PAMI awards back in 2024.
Remember? That's what who's good news means. Did you know that? It means do you remember it like Swedish or something?
Really? It does. The reasons to love the podcast nostalgia. Oh my god.
There's fireworks happening in my video. There is? Oh wow. That's a little excerpt from my favorite after school special.
First airing. Look at this. Oh. A little cheat sheet.
Research sheet. A good podcast is about information. Is it? Yes.
I mean we didn't win those PAMIs. Oh we're finally revealing that. We were nominated in this year. No nominations?
No nominations. It was February of last year that we were notified that we were nominated. For the PAMIs. That's the podcast awards.
Anyway, February 4th, 1976. The Cosmic Awareness of Duffy Moon. The Amazing Cosmic Awareness. It was a wonderful.
February 4th, my mom's birthday. Oh yeah, 1976. So this was um, you know what's cool? I was thinking that in a lot of ways I was learning to banish all negative thoughts from your mind.
Picture what you want to happen. The first principle of cosmic awareness is to banish all negative thoughts from your mind. You picture what you want to happen. The first principle of cosmic awareness is to banish all negative thoughts from your mind.
You picture what you want to happen. Uncanny right? Mm-hmm. So self-help.
Mm-hmm. So it was an after school special about this kid that's kind of into a self-help program called Cosmic Awareness. Wow. And ahead of its time.
Yeah. It even had some sort of subtle references to like Scientology in it. Anyway, I'm so excited I can barely know. Oh.
Oh. That's the bad guy theme in the show. Amazing. Of course the bad guy music always.
The indication. So it's about a kid who starts reading a book called Cosmic Awareness because he's very short and he so he starts reading this book so he can build himself up and gain superpowers through this self-help book. You mean get taller? No.
Oh. No, just to become a stronger person to empower himself as he was. Yeah, there's no talk of him like super naturally growing taller. It was about expanding his mind.
You can tell it. This is what he hears. Oh. You can tell it.
This is mine talking to him. Here's the cool thing. I found. You can do it.
The demo version. I found the original version of the theme song and now people who know this know how great the theme song is but what I found was the very original demo of the theme song. Incredible. Which has like all these extra verses in it.
Really? Yeah. For the show itself, they kind of reduced it down to just like you know the first verse. You can do it.
This is it. He's gone and a pastation. A pecro and a big best friend. He can do the impossible.
Nothing. Nothing moon can. Nothing. Nothing moon can.
Boots. Maccophies. Comes here again. Comes here again.
Comes here again. Comes here again. It's a dark scene somewhere. It's cool.
The original song goes through the plot points. You're proud of all. You just stumbled upon this. Yeah.
The internet's amazing. What can't you find out there? Boots and Maccophies. The is the unseen like you know enemy of W.
Boots. Boots. Maccophies. When you're up here.
Don't afraid of Boots Maccophies. You're in part of big surprise. A smart strong world with a gardening business. Don't care about the theme moon size.
She don't care about the theme moon size. She's got the secret weapon. She's got the secret plan. You can do the impossible.
Nothing. Nothing moon can. Nothing. Nothing moon can.
Oh my goodness. Why would I ball? You can do it, Duffy Moon. Yeah.
We should all have a poster in our house saying you can do it, Duffy Moon. Well you know the show was it was kind of a sensation for us kids. No you're talking about the show not the episode. The episode.
Oh the episode of the it was just a one one time shot. It was a 45 minute show. Left to right underneath. So enough to ride for free.
Little enough to ride for free. So enough to ride on your knees. Those kids that repeated this. No enough to ride for free.
No enough to ride on your knee. No enough to ride for free. There were basically like memes that came from the show like people. I was not the only one.
Many of us and at least two or three of the people listening to this right now know what I'm talking about. That we did adopt that you can do with Duffy Moon. Mmm. And little enough to ride.
So you mean little enough to ride for free. It's just the show is loaded with these awesome tidbits that you could you could repeat. So you were like 10 or something when this came out. Nine.
So your Duffy Moon. So your Duffy Moon. That's good to know. Right.
See. In your booth, Maccavey. So your Duffy Moon. The whole episode.
The whole show. Yeah. Maccavey. I wish it was an episode.
They could have blown this thing into a huge series. Incredible. Well, it was an episode. It was an episode of an after school special.
I just want to clarify because people are like there might be people listening who don't even know what after school special is. After school special was the name of a series that it was each individual episode was its own story. Yes. So that's I just wanted people to know that's what we're talking about.
It was on after school. Yes. And I used to watch it too. And it was still going in the 80s.
Or maybe it was reruns. But I think it was still going. This is from before you were porn. Well, yeah.
This is from February 4th, 1976. I know that. So this one like imprinted on you. Oh my God.
This particular episode of the show. Yeah. Anybody close to anybody within a year or two of me. Was talking about Duffy Moon.
Yeah. And so I re-watched the show a couple of times. To prepare to do work for this podcast episode. Research.
Research. You did research. That's did research. That's real podcast stuff.
This is real podcast stuff. Oh my gosh. One thing I noticed about the show was there's a lot of yelling in it. The characters are like almost constantly yelling at each other and I'm like oh my God.
And I remember one thing that I ran into a lot of trouble in my life for being I could become very passionate and start yelling. Not necessarily being angry at people but sort of as an ordinary discourse with my friends and family. There was often a lot of yelling involved. I mean and I ran into trouble with that especially when I moved to Massachusetts.
And I thought so I began to think that I was like where did my propensity to start yelling whenever I'm having a passionate discussion. And I've always thought I was like oh it must be some sort of family trauma. Then I realized it was just TV because in the 70s everybody was yelling at each other on TV. And the show is a perfect example of that.
This show is like it has every not everybody. It has a wonderful array of character actors and child actors in it who were in a ton of other stuff for instance. Okay. Made on me.
Here we go. Duffy was played by Eisenman who was also the star of a Disney movie series called Escape From Witch Mountain. I've heard of that. There were several of them.
I loved it although it was totally murky and I never had any idea what the movies were about but we were excited because it was made for us. It was a Disney movie made for us. Escape From Witch Mountain. There was several of them that were like returning to Witch Mountain.
But Ike was in all these other shows. Ike. And Ike would be like he would show up on emergency. He showed up on all of the sitcoms and dramas and all of the people in the cast.
They were busy. I went through the IMDB of a bunch of people in this cast and they all have a credit for being an emergency. Emergency was an incredible hour long drama series about some firefighters. Not firefighters but an emergency.
The Ambulance. The EMTs. The EMTs. In Los Angeles County.
Wonderful show. Fantastic theme. I should really get to that someday. But all these people pretty much did their time doing all those cool shows.
Incredible. Yeah. Comities. sitcoms.
And then he is now he's actually in the business phenomenon actor. What's he doing? He does digital animation. Wow.
Ike. And then his best friend was played by Lance Kerwin who was like everywhere. Another one. But he didn't act after like he was a child star but then didn't really follow up on that.
Lance what happened? Lance had an amazing show called James at 15 which was a gritty drama series. Oh it sounds quite great. I'm a pre my so-called life but James at 15 and he even loses his virginity in it.
I remember it was like you know tonight on a very special James at 15. It was like a serious. Yeah. But so Lance is in it.
Lance and Ike are in it yelling at each other. The whole fucking. Oh my gosh. And then a lot of the a lot of the older the characters who are great because they really dig into their scenes.
They like they really there's a woman named Nora Denny in it. Okay. And she was Mike TV's mom on Willy Wong's Chocolate Factory. Now this you don't know what I'm talking about.
Mike TV the kid. The kid in Willy Wong at the original Willy Wong who disappears into the TV. Oh oh. I don't know if you have the same.
Of course I've seen the I mean that's an incredible movie. Gene Wilder. Are you kidding? That that that movie ripped my heart out of my chest.
What a what a trip. What a fucking trip that movie. Yeah. But Mike TV's mom is in this.
Okay. Nora Denny right and she showed up and again she's like oh my god it's that woman. Like she was on Bill Witch and every so he's like an early nipo baby. He his mom was in the biz.
He was in the biz. Right. You just said Mike TV's mom. Mike TV.
Yeah but Mike TV. I don't even know what happened to Mike TV. Well right. But I'm saying he had an acting career for a little while right and his mom was.
I can't talk about Mike TV right now. I don't know who that is. We're talking about Lance Kerwin. I like Isaman Nora Denny.
Now here's now this is this is for something for the heads here. You just said Nora Denny was Mike TV's mom. I did. That was in the that that was in the movie Willy Wong in the Chocolate Factory.
Right. Mark one. Okay. Listen.

Yes. Significant maybe only to me and again maybe one other person listening to this podcast. Should I mark Prada? Are you there?
Yeah. Sorry. Norah Denny. Yes.
Was the mother of Dix Denny in the weirdos like one of the very first LA punk bands. What do you mean she was the mother? She was literally the biological mother to the weirdos. Two of two members of the weirdos.
Okay. Two humans. Two human to living breathing humans that started a punk rock band in the late 70s in Los Angeles called the weirdos who had a fantastic song called We've Got the Neutron Bomb. Oh yeah.
She was their mom. Well damn. So this show is like it's jam packed with with character actors. This is just rich.
It's so meaty. The the interstitial music and the theme is all on synthesizers so it sounds really awesome. Yeah. And you know I can't play the actual theme.
People got to go watch this obvious. Well obviously you're gonna have a link to it in the show notes. Yes. And also Mary Earl was in the show which she was like the old lady that wasn't everything.
She was like you need an old lady? There she is. Mary Earl. She's so cute.
She was in a bazillion commercial. I love the idea of her. If you saw her you'd be like oh yeah. It's that it's the old lady because she played the old lady.
Yeah. And everything. All these people were in commercial. She walked down that role.
She was a little bit old lady. She was born in 1889. Dear God. I'm dying Glendale.
I was just gonna say I bet she owned a nice little home either in Burbank or Glendale. I want to die in Glendale. Just like me. So this is my breathless.
I finally did this. This is one of my first objectives when we set out to do a podcast. I knew somehow some way one day I would do an episode at least partially dedicated. We'd find our way to cosmic awareness.
The whole show you think boots and macafees like this bad ass who's gonna kick the shit out of Ike Island and Lance Kerberin. See they're competing businesses that do odd jobs around the neighborhood. So when Duffy starts doing odd jobs when he's empowered by his self-help book and his mantra you can do it. Wow.
His mantra. He could do incredible stuff. Just like the original theme. Yeah.
Exposes all the plot points. He could lift boulders. He did some pretty incredible stuff. Just by the power of his mind.
I believe he could do it. Even though Lance Kerberin, who played Peter, his best friend, was skeptical. He couldn't deny that things did happen when Duffy kicked into his mantra of mantra. Things would happen.
And also Duffy had trained a crow. There's a crow through the whole thing of a trained crow in almost every scene. Gorgeous. Amazing.
Yeah. I love this bird for him. Very trainable actually. Very intelligent birds.
And as evidenced by that, I'm like this crow that crow did a fucking killer job. Good job crow. Even the crow's great. Even the animal talent is good on this thing.
So anyway, so when he comes up, he's now competing. The other group is called Help is Here. And they all wear shirts. They wear white shirts that say Help is Here and they believe this.
They beat the shit out of Duffy a couple of times. Help is here. To beat the shit out of you. At least two or three times in the course of this episode, this show.
So anyway, so like Boots is never saying like wait a boat here's about this. There's a lot of really funny. It also reminded me in the 70s still like every show had to have a New York character in it. There always had to be somebody who talked in a heavy New York accent in every single show.
Even though this show was clearly based in the Los Angeles area and shot on some lot within the city. But anyway, Boots finally, the final reveal, the last thing is that Boots is a girl. A woman, a young woman. And she's like, so you're a Duffy Moon.
And then just goes like, she they basically joined forces. The end of the show is he joins forces. So the cosmic awareness, although they do meet the guy who wrote the book Cosmic Awareness and this is great. It turns out to be the millionaire Thurston Howell III from Gilligan's Island.
Oh my god, I love him so much. Jim Backus and he's living in a run down apartment in Skid Row in Los Angeles. He is. And of course he's a scam.
It doesn't matter because Duffy took the message that he needed to take. I thought you were saying a real life he's living in Skid Row in Los Angeles now. I don't know what happened. I do not know what happened to Jim Backus.
I don't know. Gilligan's Island. I'm sure he's buried at Forest Lawn Cemetery. That's my guess.
I hope so. He probably passed away peacefully in his sleep. Okay. Yeah.
And in Los Angeles County. That's a guess. Beautiful. So yeah, he turns out that Jim Backus Thurston Howell is the guy who wrote the book and they go downtown and eat him.
And he turns out to be kind of a scam. But still, you know, Duffy, he took something from it. He got something from it. Really, it's a I love the show and I wanted to share that with you.
And I was super pumped about finding the original. Truly incredible. Yeah. It's a bulkier than I thought.
You know, I mean, because the theme that's in the show is sung by a woman and it's it's almost all synthesizers, which is pretty cool. That's what I really like about it. A 70s TV show with like synthesizers in between the scenes like, wow. Oh god, I love that.
Those are like the best segues in the brain. You know, stuff. It was just like the best. Just some early, early synth work.
Yeah. So less. Well, I was going to say Duffy Moon and Boots McAfee would be incredible cat names, right? This is Duffy Moon and Boots McAfee.
And then Boots McAfee, they'd be like, oh, are they brothers? And you'd be like, actually, it's a boy and a girl, they are sibling because Boots McAfee would be a girl kitty, right? Kind of like my former cat Bob, who was a girl, that'd be kind of adorable. So those are adorable names or if you just decided to like be that groovy couple now who names their kids directly after that episode, adorbs, right?
You name your children after this is a documentary. This is definitely, you know, you know, you know, you know, a family that named a child after a my little pony. We do. We do.
We do. Yeah. So I mean, what? Why not Duffy Moon?
I don't know. I just want to say I loved after school specials. I don't know if I have like the memory though captured like you do of one in particular though, but it was something you did, you know, they weren't as good. Oh, in the 80s.
Maybe I don't know. Maybe that was like the golden era of after school specials. I don't remember any other after school special. Wow.
I only remember that one. And actually, you know, we've been talking about the first sebdo record, the free man. There is a Duffy Moon excerpt. Stop.
Yeah. I'm not a record. Wow. I did love Gilligan's Island though.
And that show is like solely responsible for planting in me totally insane fantasy worlds that could occupy way too much of my time, you know, just the whole fantasy of it of like, we're shipwrecked. We're on this island now and like, we're stuck together. We got to live in these little huts and things like that. We're going to build a new community and like, I was obsessed.
I wanted to be almost like every single character. Like there was at different points I wanted to be each one. I wanted to be, you know, like, was it Marianne, you know, like a little gingham fucking bra looking hot, right? Or who was the one who was like supposed to be the Hussey who'd always wear like the evening gowns?
Ginger ginger. I mean, come on guys, you know, it was just like, I wanted to go between being Marianne and Ginger. I'm both. But listen, that show fueled much distraction for baby Adele.
I wanted to go between Marianne and Ginger. I bet you did. I bet you did. I bet you did.
I always thought the professor was really it was like your fumbling, man. Look it. I mean, he was good-looking guy. Hot.
Yeah. He was pretty a trusty. He was pretty real. The guy was hot.
I went on the one, I went on a vacation once in my former life to Kauai, the island of Kauai. It's not the farthest island out of the Hawaiian chain, but it's on to the west. But it's pretty damn close. It doesn't mean anything to me.
Anyway, it's the oldest geologically. It's the oldest island in the chain. Okay. So there's no active volcanoes on Kauai.
I don't think but it's really worn down as a beautiful island. Amazing. But the channel, why am I going on about Kauai? Let's do it.
But you can't get out there. You couldn't like back in the day. Tell me what happened in Kauai. They shot the beginning of going to Thailand there, but they shipped palm trees from Los Angeles.
Really? Yeah. To Kauai? To Kauai.
Wild. So it could look like an island. But it was already an island. Oh my gosh.
I'm gonna have a sip of this delicious smoothie and think about that. Mm. Mm. Mm.
Mm. Mm. It looks great. It is.
I wonder who made it. I did. I made your smoothie. That's Luby's Blueby's Smoothie.
It's a little special power smoothie. Holy shit. It's good. Good job.
Yeah. It's gonna carry me through the day. Thank you. It does.
It does. It can carry you through the whole day. I was needing a slurp so I had to do it. That's all for now guys.
Yeah. Hopefully I did Duffy the cosmic awareness of Duffy's. People from that cast, you know, maybe they're gonna like hear that OG theme song and reach out to you and be like oh my thank you. Thank you for unearthing that.
Yeah. Or how dare you? You. You.
Mm-hmm. I can't believe that. You shall not be monetized. It'll be great.
It's gonna be good.
