At the edge of midnight, Agadir’s defenses were at their lowest. Most people slept, trusting their homes to keep them safe. But the true warning signs had been written into the city’s walls for years—if only someone had listened.It was late on February twenty-ninth, nineteen sixty—a leap-year night. The earthquake struck at about eleven forty p.m. Reports and later analysis agree: the magnitude was about five point seven. That number might seem modest, but the quake’s shallow depth and closeness to the city made the shaking unforgiving.
