Aging Parents of Adult Children With Disabilities

Adult children with disabilities may live at home with parents, or in group home or other settings. In many cases, their aging parents are key to their care, supervision and welfare. What do those aging parents need to think about to help prepare their children for the inevitable? Obviously, they need to take appropriate estate planning steps. They need to do more than that, though. They need to think about how to arrange for the care and supervision they are providing — even after they are no longer able to provide that support. These concerns are, no doubt, partly economic. But they are more than that. They are also practical concerns, and involve other family members and care providers.
