Un informe de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Educación, la Ciencia y la Cultura inidca que el agua de los oceanos se está calentando ahora al doble del ritmo de hace veinte años y se estima que en 2023 se registró uno de los mayores aumentos de temperatura desde la década de 1950. El Informe sobre el Estado del Océano destaca qu, a diferencia de las temperaturas atmosféricas, que tienden a fluctuar, el océano se calienta de forma constante y sostenida.
