The Commoditization Threshold is a framework that describes the line every human capability sits on between scarcity and abundance. Capabilities above the threshold are scarce, difficult to produce, and more valuable on the labor market. Capabilities below it are abundant, easy to replicate, and no longer differentiate the professional who holds them, no matter how skilled they are personally. AI has moved a larger and more sophisticated group of human capabilities below this threshold than any previous technology, which is why senior expertise is now being repriced. Key Concepts Commoditization Threshold: The line between scarce, differentiating capabilities and abundant, undifferentiating ones; AI has pushed drafting, analysis, computations, communications, and strategy below it. Exposure vs. Elevation: Exposure happens when a senior professional’s visible contribution sits inside the layer AI just commoditized; elevation happens when they develop value beyond that layer or use AI to remove the commodifiable part of their work. Repricing at the Senior Level: The specific form AI disruption takes for senior roles, characterized by compensation scrutiny, juniors closing the output gap, and visible work losing its ability to distinguish one leader from another.
