Aisha's Story
from Blocked Britain · host Blocked Britain
In Sheffield Brightside and Hillsborough, one of England's most deprived constituencies, 28-year-old Aisha dreamed of becoming a nurse to serve her community. But her path was blocked not by lack of ability or demand for healthcare workers, but by a political choice. HM Treasury's spending limits constrained Health Education England's budget, treating public investment in NHS training as a cost to minimise rather than the means by which qualified nurses reach understaffed wards. The training places existed. People wanted to fill them. Yorkshire and The Humber's hospitals desperately needed staff. What was missing was a central government willing to fund the posts that could have transformed both Aisha's future and her community's health. This is Blocked Britain. Disclosure: This programme advocates for deficit spending to fund public services.
