Akihabara Hustle: Sho Explains MOTHER 2 Market Shifts, Tochigi Road Trip Myths, and Akiba Tourist Tax

In this episode of Akihabara Hustle, Sho and Alex dive into the harsh reality of retro gaming in 2026. While many tourists still dream of finding mint-condition treasures in an Akiba junk corner, Sho explains why the 'Cheap Japan' myth is officially dead. He warns Alex that calling a game Earthbound instead of MOTHER 2 instantly triggers a tourist tax from savvy resellers looking to exploit naive collectors. We discuss why driving to a rural Hard Off in Tochigi might actually be a self-imposed tax rather than a bargain-hunting success. The conversation covers how the market for Sega Saturn titles and complete-in-box items with their original obi has shifted toward high-end shops like Surugaya. Sho breaks down the brutal economics of the modern scavenger hunt, revealing how the Mercari shadow has permanently changed the landscape for independent resellers and hobbyists alike. Is it still possible to find a $50 masterpiece, or are those days gone forever? Tune in to hear the unfiltered truth about what your spreadsheet is missing regarding the Japanese retro market. #RetroGaming #Akihabara #HardOff #Mother2 #GameCollectingThis episode includes AI-generated content.
