Alaska's Bold Permanent Fund Decision
from Anchorage News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Fifty years ago, Alaskas House of Representatives passed a groundbreaking bill, the Permanent Fund amendment, by a landslide vote. This bill, sparked by oil riches from Prudhoe Bay, laid the foundation for one of the most successful savings plans in history. The debate, captured in a rare recording, featured legends like Clark Gruening and Hugh Malone, who advocated for saving oil money before it vanished on daily needs. The lone no vote came from Representative Nels Anderson, who feared the pipeline wouldnt finish on time. The bill faced opposition over investments, with Republicans demanding a ban on stocks after a previous loss, and Democrats pushing back, saying rigid limits would trap the fund in boring bonds. Despite the clashes, the House shot down the stock ban and sent the measure ahead. Alaska voters approved it in a landslide, and the fund has since grown to over eighty-five billion dollars, providing dividends to every Alaskan today. This debate serves as a reminder of how bold choices can fuel generations of wealth. Support the show: Get a discount at https://solipillow.com/discount/dnn.
