In The Count of Monte Cristo, the catacombs release Albert as the Count’s authority brings the matter to a close. Albert learns that no ransom has been paid, but that his freedom comes through the Count, and he responds with easy composure, greeting both Franz and his rescuer.   The bandits stand aside as he departs without resistance, and Vampa himself takes a torch to guide them out, offering apologies for the mistake.
