Alberta Expands Testing for Grades 4-5 | Calgary News

Alberta is rolling out expanded standardized testing for grades four and five this fall, building on its existing K-3 program aimed at catching learning gaps early—backed by a $20 million investment to fund tests, support staff, and spring rescreening. While officials tout the success of the earlier initiative, with many students no longer needing extra help after a year, teachers’ unions warn that up to 32 tests by grade 6 could overwhelm classrooms and divert time from actual teaching. The province insists data will drive targeted support, but critics argue smaller classes and direct classroom intervention are more effective than testing.
