Albertans Reject Separation in Poll

Albertans are largely against separation from Canada, with three in five saying no to splitting off in a potential referendum, as new polling reveals widespread dissatisfaction with Premier Danielle Smith’s handling of the issue. Her proposed ballot question, which asks whether Alberta should remain a province or begin legal steps toward a binding separation vote, has sparked confusion and criticism — with over half of respondents believing she’s motivated by political survival. While hardcore separatists complain about the wording, others see the whole process as a distraction. Older Albertans lean more toward separation than younger ones, raising concerns about generational consequences. And crucially, most Albertans don’t believe separatists would accept the outcome if the vote stays within Canada — hinting at deep divisions and potential unrest regardless of the October result.
