Alberta’s Care-First Insurance Debate | Calgary News

Alberta’s rolling out a “care-first” auto insurance model in 2027 designed to simplify and slash costs—but it’s sparking a fierce debate over victims’ rights. Under the plan, suing for pain and suffering after accidents will be severely restricted, with court access limited to cases involving criminal offenses or major violations. Personal injury lawyers are pushing back, arguing that even expanding litigation for life-altering injuries from reckless driving would be better than the current proposal, which they say excludes nearly everyone. The government insists its focus is on delivering savings while balancing protection for injured drivers, but the Insurance Bureau of Canada warns that more litigation could hike premiums and undo those savings. Lawyer Mark McCourt contends there are smarter ways to cut costs without stripping accident victims of their legal recourse. The projected savings? Around $297 per vehicle annually—but the real question remains: how much should Albertans sacrifice in legal rights for lower premiums?
