Alberta's Independence Push Gains Steam | Calgary News

Alberta’s independence referendum is just two months away, and separatist leader Wilson is leading the charge with a grassroots campaign called “Let Alberta Decide,” fueled by $425K in small donations and powered by AI to personalize messages for every voter. Unlike past sovereignty movements, this effort operates outside party politics, aiming to prove major decisions can succeed without traditional structures. Wilson has laid out a detailed blueprint covering finance, defense, and daily services, while acknowledging the messy reality of grassroots rallies — but staying focused on economic grievances and Ottawa’s mismanagement. With U.S.-Canada trade talks stalled, he argues Alberta’s energy resources give Canada leverage — and that Alberta itself is the stronger player. Confident even if they lose, Wilson sees this as a tectonic shift driven by demographics and economics, warning that alienating independence supporters could fracture the Conservatives and hand the NDP power again.
