Nato nel 1881 in una zona prevalentemente italiana dell'Impero austro-ungarico, Alcide De Gasperi è un convinto oppositore del fascismo. Nel 1943 fonda il Partito Democratico Cristiano e diventa il primo Presidente del Consiglio della Repubblica Italiana. Governerà il Paese fino al 1953. Insieme a Konrad Adenauer e Robert Schuman svolge un ruolo fondamentale nella promozione dell'integrazione europea.
