Alexandra protests

from African Dialogue · host Channel Africa

Mayor of South Africa's City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Herman Mashaba, was forced to abandon his public engagement with the residents of Alexandra Township last night, following disruptions at the Marlboro Community Centre. This after a group of protesters continued singing and refused to cooperate with city officials for about an hour, preventing the programme from starting. This resulted in Mashaba and his officials leaving the stage. The disruptions follow two weeks of protests over the mushrooming of illegal structures in the township, as well as the lack of service delivery. To assist us on the environment before elections we speak to:• Tsholofelo Nakedi Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation’s community interventions programme manager.• Bobby Solomons, Alex Shutdown Convener. • Phillip Molekoa, head of advocacy of the South African Human Rights Commission.
