Alien Confusion: How Eating Meat is Like Handing Our Planet To The Cows
from The Alien Among You · host Luc Boutin
Did you know that it's estimated that 1.5 billion cows are now living on Earth? Yeah you read that right. 1.5 billion. That's like 18% of the global HUMAN POPULATION. If we talk about this in terms of biomass, considering an average human weighs about 133 lbs (60 kg) and an average cow weights about 1200-1400 lbs (540-640 kg), there is roughly the same total biomass of cattle to humans on Earth. Then you throw in all the other livestock we eat and the numbers are beyond staggering. Why on earth do we have so much livestock living on our planet?? Well it's two main reasons: the world eats a lot of meat (too much meat), and producing meat is a very inneficient way to produce food. This episode dives into how eating meat doesn't make sense if we want to live on earth sustainably. There is just no way around it. But thankfully, there are many ways in which we can change our eating habits that would virtually solve this problem overnight.
