All About Jesus: His Baptism, Temptation & the Gospel | Mark 1:9–15 (Week 3)

from UnstoppableRevKev · host Kevin M. Kelley

Why was Jesus baptized if He had no sin to confess? What is the significance of the heavens being torn open and the Holy Spirit descending upon Him? And why was Jesus immediately driven into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan? In Week 3 of our sermon series: Prepare the Way, Pastor Kevin M. Kelley examines Mark 1:9–15, revealing the profound biblical significance of Jesus' baptism, His victory over Satan in the wilderness, and His proclamation of the Gospel of God. At the center of it all is one unchanging truth: It's not about us. It's ALL ABOUT JESUS! When King Jesus enters the Jordan River to be baptized by John the Baptist, He does so not because He needs repentance or forgiveness, but to identify fully with fallen, sinful humanity. As He emerges from the water, the heavens are torn open, the Holy Spirit descends upon Him, and God the Father declares, "You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased." Immediately, the Spirit drives Jesus into the wilderness for forty days, where He faces the full force of Satan's temptation. Unlike Israel, whose wilderness experience was marked by repeated rebellion and disobedience, Jesus remains the sinless, obedient Son of God—the promised Messiah who came not just to rescue, but to redeem humanity. This expository Bible sermon explores the biblical doctrine of baptism, the significance of the Jordan River, the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, spiritual regeneration, and what it truly means to be buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life. Discover why biblical baptism is about complete identification with Jesus Christ—not an external, aquatic religious ceremony, spiritual superstition, or outward appearances—and why genuine Christianity requires repentance, surrender, and a completely transformed identity in Christ. John the Baptist prepared the way. Jesus fulfilled the Father's will. And when the time had come, King Jesus proclaimed, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe in the gospel!" The Gospel isn't about making Jesus part of (y)our story. It's about abandoning (y)our old lives and becoming part of His redemptive mission. The question is simple: Have you truly been buried with Christ in baptism and raised to walk in newness of life—or is your life still all about you?
