Allan Steps Down for Carroll | Melbourne News
from Melbourne News Today | 2 Min News | The Daily News Now!
Jacinta Allan is stepping down as Victoria’s premier to clear the way for deputy Ben Carroll to take over without a contested leadership battle, just four months before election day. Her resignation follows mounting pressure over the “Big Build” scandal, where she admitted criminal conduct but resisted calls for a royal commission — a stance that reportedly fractured party unity. Carroll, who supports a royal commission and has pledged to tackle teacher pay, boost the economy, and support businesses, had denied any leadership ambitions. By stepping aside, Allan avoids a drawn-out leadership contest under party rules and ensures a smoother transition as the Labor party prepares for the looming election.
