Allergic to Being Broke
from Proverbs Daily Podcast Hosted by Fred Lynch
Proverbs 11:15: “He who puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but the one who hates indebtedness is secure.” Today’s Episode: Allergic to Being Broke Last month my sister asked if I was gonna work on Labor Day. I told her, “I have to go to work cause I’m allergic to being broke.” We both fell out laughing. Some people are allergic to pollen. Some can’t do peanuts. Me? An empty bank account starts making me itch. Now, I was joking. Mostly. Cause we’re shaped by what we love, and by what we don’t want to live through again. Proverbs 11:15 is talking about a very specific risk: putting yourself on the hook for a stranger’s debt. You signed your name and poof…they disappeared. Guess who the bank still knows how to find? You. Wisdom says, be careful what you agree to carry. Listen again. Proverbs 11:15 in the Berean Standard Bible says: “But the one who hates indebtedness is secure.” Yeah, ‘hate’ is a strong word here, but refusing that financial risk creates a boundary. And we all need boundaries. And that gets me thinking beyond just ‘money’. Maybe you grew up around shouting, so now peace at home matters more than winning arguments. Maybe somebody broke a promise that mattered, and now you’re careful about giving your word. Some of your character has been built around a quiet decision: I don’t want anybody else feeling what I felt. There’s love working inside that type of ‘boundary’. But we gotta pay attention. That allergy gets me to work. But when I’m worn out, I need to rest. Keeping money in my pocket can’t cost me my body and mind. Broke is hard. Broken down is expensive too. And struggling financially doesn’t mean somebody lacks wisdom. Life can get expensive quickly! People get sick. Jobs disappear. You know it’s hard out here. So the question is: What is this type of ‘hate’ or aversion helping me build? Can I name something good that I’m protecting, or am I just spending my life being a miser? 🔥 REMEMBER Let what hurt you teach you how to care for what matters now. 🙏🏽 PRAYER God, guide my boundaries toward love, responsibility, healing, and peace. 🎯 TODAY’S CHALLENGE Write down one experience you don’t want to repeat and then describe the new found peace you want to keep protecting. Choose one action that protects it today. Put it on your calendar, do it, and check it off. About the Author Fred Lynch is a creative communicator, author, and Christian Hip Hop pioneer.
