Alternative #69 ☀️ // Prof Jeffrey M. Gordon - From Algae to Biofuel and Hydrogen
from אלטרנטיבה || פודקאסט הקיימות של ישראל · host Up to Us
Prof Jeffrey M. Gordon - Professor Emeritus at BGU of the Negev, Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research, Department of Solar Energy, focuses on solar efficiency and innovative conversion into electricity, heat and fuels. Part of the pioneering founding generation of BGU’s campus for desert sciences from the 1970s. The Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research - https://in.bgu.ac.il/en/bidr/Pages/default.aspx Summery : To produce biomes: Oxygen + biomes = Water + Co2 + Light To produce hydrogen: Oxygen + hydrogen = Water + Light 🌍 In this chapter, we explore the complex landscape of global energy consumption. Currently, electricity constitutes just one-sixth of the entire energy consumption, with the remaining five-sixths allocated to various sectors such as automobiles, trucks, air travel, marine transport, and more. 💡 As the world transitions towards electric vehicles and energy-efficient heating solutions like heat pumps, electricity has the potential to become a dominant force, accounting for half of all human energy consumption. 🔌 However, a critical challenge lies in addressing the other half of energy consumption that cannot be easily electrified. To bridge this gap, the concept of 'solar fuels' emerges as a crucial solution. Solar fuels offer the potential to not only meet nearly 100% of electricity needs but also satisfy the energy demands of sectors that remain outside the realm of electrification. 🔄 Two distinct approaches guide our journey in this endeavor: demand-side and supply-side strategies. 🏢 On the demand side, individuals and industries are encouraged to modify their energy consumption behavior. This includes practices such as energy conservation, reserving energy, and compelling electric vehicle manufacturers to develop more efficient engines and heating solutions like heat pumps. 🏭 On the supply side, the focus is on maintaining existing energy consumption patterns while transitioning to renewable energy sources. Two notable examples include the hydrogen economy, which involves adapting infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen-based energy systems, and the visionary 'ultimate supply-side scenario' where fuels are produced using solar energy without necessitating changes in consumer behavior. 🌱 These strategies collectively lay the groundwork for a sustainable and energy-efficient future, addressing the challenges of evolving global energy demands. Things I learned: 1. Algae can make biofuels and hydrogen. 2. Fuels serve as one of the most efficient methods for long-term energy storage. 3. Amazon is one of the biggest private satellite companies.
