Jesus taught that in order to enter heaven a person needs grace (the life of God within our soul) and charity (the virtue of supernatural love for God). While these gifts are infused at the moment of baptism, once we become self-responsible we must make choices that maintain and increase these gifts within our souls, otherwise we will lose them.
