Ambassadors at Odds Over Canada | Calgary News

When tensions flare between Canada and the U.S., former ambassadors Bruce Heyman and Pete Hoekstra offer wildly different takes—Heyman, vocal and pro-Canadian on social media, contrasts sharply with Hoekstra, whose comments have sparked outrage and a 260,000-signature petition for his removal. Both hail from Midwestern states hit hard by trade disputes, where deep economic ties to Canada—especially in auto exports—make their public stances especially consequential. Heyman’s nostalgic, supportive posts highlight shared history and mutual respect, while Hoekstra’s dismissive remarks about Canada’s value and role in major infrastructure projects have fueled backlash. As trade wars simmer and public sentiment turns sour, their contrasting styles reveal how personal diplomacy can either heal or deepen rifts.
