America: Country or Continent?

What is the meaning of America? Is it a country? One continent or two? During Bad Bunny's Super Bowl Halftime show, the Puerto Rican singer-songwriter said "God bless America!" before naming every country in the continent. Depending on who you ask, what is and isn't considered "America" is up for debate. How exactly did the disparity come about and what is the difference?
