Under en period på 00-talet öppnar klädföretaget American Apparel en butik i veckan någonstans i världen. De sportiga basic-kläderna som marknadsförs med lättklädda, provokativa annonser över hela internet, är “made in america”. Närmare bestämt i downtown Los Angeles, och säljs av snygga ungdomar som handplockats för jobbet, i ljusa, minimalistiska butiker på de bästa adresserna i stora städer världen över. Det kallas för en modesensation, anses bana vägen för den amerikanska hipster-kulturen, blir del av en ungdomsrörelse, och deras VD och grundare Dov charney blir en kändis i egen rätt.American Apparel börsnoteras och expanderar, ungdomar står i kö för att få jobba där, konkurrenterna studerar dem och försöker förstå vad deras it-faktor består i.
