Dr. Henry Howard Holmes or H. H. Holmes was an American con artist and serial killer.  Holmes was accused of killing 9 people, confessed to killing 27 people, and was alleged to have killed upward of 200, but there were several holes in his confession.  Some of the victims, he claimed to murder, were actually still walking among the living.  However, H. H. Holmes was convicted of killing one person and sentenced to death.   That execution was carried out on May 7, 1896.
