Ciertos estudios revelan que los cuidados maternos se traducen en modificaciones químicas en el ADN, en particular en el ADN de algunas neuronas. Se ha descubierto, también, que el cerebro es un mosaico genético porque no todas sus células tienen el mismo genoma. Estas variaciones son producidas por elementos genéticos "saltarines", llamados transposones, capaces de copiarse a sí mismos y de insertarse una vez copiados en otro lugar del genoma. Ahora, Investigadores del instituto Salk de la Jolla, California, han realizado experimentos con ratones de laboratorio recién nacidos a los que ponen bajo los cuidados de madres adoptivas muy amorosas o, al contrario, más bien desdeñosas con ellos. Los investigadores descubren una mayor acumulación de transposones en el cerebro de los ratones que reciben menor cariño de sus madres.
