AN EXTINCTION OF A DIFFERENT KIND, longer version, w/ Clark's Nutcrackers counter-singing
from Cliff Crego · host Cliff Crego
THIS IS A longer version of this miniature. Grounded in wilderness. The family cohort of Clark's Nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana)was recorded aty 2500 meters, in JULY in the Eagle Cap Wilderness, OREGON. The Nutcrackers are a key avian species at altitude. The have for millennia been intimately related to the great WHITEBARK PINES. The relationship is an asymmetrical symbiosis, that is, the pines, because their cones do not open, is completely dependent on the birds to harvest, cache, and thereby distribute their seeds. So the Nutcrackers have an extremely high-quality freely-available food source above 2200 metes, so they stay high all year round, even in winter. But only if the pines are healthy, and still producing cones. With Climate Crisis, this relationship is being torn apart. A hotter, drier climate means the pines will retreat to higher, colder altitudes and latitudes. And the birds will migrate to lower, other food sources. Both will sadly become more and more locally extinct. With my writing and photography and music work, I am witnessing this drama right before my eyes, and ears.
