An Interview with Geoff Pike – Leadership Wisdom from an FA Coach Educator

from Leader Manager Coach Podcast

Geoff Pike is an accomplished football player, winning the FA cup with West Ham, in 1980. When injury ended his playing career, he was asked to coach. He worked hard and ended up heading up The English FA's Elite Coaching Team. Teaching and inspiring many of today´s best coaches. He recently left the FA but is still working as a coach educator across the world.Geoff joins Rob today to talk about his coaching journey and his recommendations for would be coaches. They discuss his leadership style and how he has adapted his approach, over the years.KEY TAKEAWAYSYou need to lead by example. If players are never allowed to make decisions on the field, they will get into the habit of always pausing and looking to the side-lines.Every leader needs to have good knowledge, otherwise it is difficult for people to believe in them.Being loud or overbearing is not an effective way to lead, you never get the most from people that way.Geoff always recognises the person, not just the player, he always looked out for any issues they were going through and offered help. When coaching you need to take a structured approach, to have objectives in mind. It's not enough to simply study the game, you need to understand it, which can only really do through experience.BEST MOMENTS‘It´s all well and good being a certain leader, but if you haven´t got the knowledge to back it up what´s the point?' ‘It's all well and good to study the game. But what do you understand about the game - why are they doing what they are doing?'‘I spent a lot of time talking to my young players, making sure that they were comfortable, etc, etc.' VALUABLE RESOURCES Leader Manager Coach PodcastZero To Pro In Four Years - By Matt Ward ABOUT THE GUEST Geoff is currently a renowned football consultant and coach educator.
