An unthreatening soft cuddly toy spider
from Daily Picture · host Stephanie Hawkins
Today I saw an image of a sweet non-threatening soft cuddly toy spider. However, it has made me think of the genuine phobia some people have towards spiders, attributed to various reasons. It could be a primal protective response to perceived danger even though only a small percentage of spiders are poisonous. It could be part of one's family or community's culture to fear spiders. It could be an instinctive aversion to spiders' physical attributes of long spindly legs and quick scuttling movements. Similarly, a fear of Jesus could be an an ancestral or cultural negative response to Jesus or indeed towards any faith, spirituality or religiosity, or it could be an aversion to what is seen on the surface of Christianity such as some of the hypocrisy, without an understanding of the depth and inner workings of Christianity. God wants to eradicate that fear so that we can approach Him with an open mind and heart. There are many verses attesting to that. 2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love and self-discipline".
