Her boyfriend at the time, Kenneth Grondin III, was convicted of her murder in 2015 and sentenced to life. In 2018, the Michigan Court of Appeals overturned his conviction finding that the jury verdict form improperly omitted a ‘not guilty’ option, rendering the verdict invalid.
