Kossert ist Experte zum Thema Flucht und Vertreibung im 20. Jahrhundert. Seine Leitfragen waren: In welchem großen geschichtlichen Zusammenhang steht die Flüchtlingsbewegung des frühen 21. Jahrhunderts? Welche Erfahrungen machen Menschen, wenn sie den Verlust von Heimat erleben? Warum ist es für Flüchtlinge und Vertriebene zu allen Zeiten so schwer, in der Fremde neue Wurzeln zu schlagen? Kossert: "Ob sie aus Ostpreußen, Syrien oder Indien flohen: Flüchtlinge sind Akteure der Weltgeschichte - ich gebe ihnen mit diesem Buch eine Stimme”.
