Welcome back to part three of this WXAV mini podcast series crossover special between the student media and the music department And now I'm joined by my good pal Andy Garcia. Andy. How are you my dude? I'm doing good.

How are you? I'm doing I'm doing well. Can a little more use to this Andy. What do you play in jazz combo for the people that do not know this?

I play the tenor saxophone. How long have you been playing saxophone roughly about six seven years six seven years? That's very very decent. How long have you been playing jazz music jazz music?

It's been two years two years. So like on your time here? Yeah, specifically here. That's right.

I started taking it a little bit more serious. Very cool dude Have you written music before this assignment? No, I have never done any compositions of any kind. So how was this a new experience for you?

It was a little bit challenging. I started over quite a few times Just because of all the theory you had to do behind it and then just coming up with the melody and new ideas that come up in your mind Just all changes in it. Very true. I flipped my notebook.

So now I'm going to play a little piece little snippet of Andy's piece titled Angry Man Andy right off the bat. How do you feel like you came up with the main melody? Because I feel like melodies are something that really happens differently for everyone. Yeah So the way I came up with this melody was just listening to the tenor solo on the original composition of this In case you guys don't know this is The main chord changes come from Good by Pork by Hat by Charles Mingus and I just listened to like the tenor solo And I kind of transcribed it and just made it into my own melody and I'm talking about the melody for it.

Very cool, dude How do you feel like the experience in the studio was for you? If that was something new for you? Yeah, that was something very new for me. I've never been to a recording studio I've never done anything like this.

So it's definitely a new experience and a fun experience You know something that I would like to do again and again Do you feel like the chemistry of the band was changed at all being in such a professional-looking setting? Yeah, like everyone just got just got along very well And we all put in a good amount of work into each other's compositions How do you feel like the process was for picking solos for your piece? It wasn't too difficult We kind of just all knew what the chord changes were and it was kind of just I trusted the Essex UJ as combo so much We all just picked it up really not much of trouble doing all the soloing and stuff very cool, dude One last thing just songs that don't have lyrics kind of do have a little reference to how the song feels with the title So I was just wondering how you came up with the title for your piece The way I came up with the title of my piece was just like I said The original composition is by Charles Mingus and Charles Mingus was known as the angry man of jazz And Charles Mingus is one of my all-time favorite composers and basses and he's just a really good musician So it's just a little tribute to his nickname. Yeah, yeah, just a tribute to his name.

Alright. Thank you, dude Alright, no problem
