Known for his sharp instincts and warm leadership, he led AP bureaus in Louisville, Indianapolis, and Los Angeles, fostering a family-like newsroom culture. His journalism journey began at 15, and after graduating from Northwestern, he rose through the ranks starting in Phoenix. Even after retiring in 2007, he remained deeply connected—winning the Oliver S. Gramling Spirit Award, writing a weekly column, and attending AP events. His ashes will be scattered at meaningful sites, leaving behind his brother, extended family, and his beloved rescue dog.
