Design for War and Peace: 2014 Annual Design History Society Conference Oxford University 2014 was a year of commemoration for the wars and unrest of the twentieth century: the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War; the anniversaries of 1944, final year of the Second World War and the opening battles of the Vietnam War in 1954; the end of apartheid in South Africa in 1994. Claire O’Mahony, Course Director of the MSt in the History of Design, convened the 2014 annual Design History Society conference at Oxford's Department for Continuing Education reflecting upon the relationship of design and craft both to conflict and to hopes for peace and justice in our collective memory and our future. Between Thursday 4 and Saturday 6 September 2014, 120 scholars travelled from 19 countries around the globe to meet at Rewley House to share and to discuss their new research about Design for War and Peace. He gained widespread recognition for his book "Economics of Good and Evil" (Oxford University Press), which has been translated into 22 languages. Sedlacek has advised former Czech President Vaclav Havel, and has lectured at the World Economic Forum and various venues around the world. For 16 years he was a Chief Macroeconomic Strategist at the largest Czech bank, and has been a longstanding member of Czech National Economic Council. The conference covers the entire spectrum of work, from practice to theory, including its peripheries. This year, there are keynotes from Chris Martens and John Launchbury; unfortunately, Rich Hickey was unable to attend as originally planned. TheOxfordAmbientCollective TheOxfordAmbientCollective The Oxford Ambient Collective (OAC) is the solo musical alter-ego of David Smith, an artist who began his compositional journey in his early thirties using software such as Buzz, FL Studio and Reason. He has a focus on a aesthetic of crafting immersive "ambient drones and ethereal soundscapes." Intentionally grounding his work in the history of the genre, Smith’s creative output reveals a clear artistic lineage, with albums like Berlin Vol. III acknowledging the "subtle German EM influences" and paying thematic homage to the pioneering Berlin School of electronic music. While deeply reverent to this historical lineage, Smith's methodology is aggressively contemporary, positioning him at the vanguard of mobile sound design by relying on a sophisticated suite of iOS applications to perform complex sonic morphing and generate his signature textures; his advanced workflow employs Soundscaper as an "experimental sound mini lab" for textural manipulation, with all audio professionally route
