March the 8th marked International Women’s Day a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. The theme of International Women’s Day 2020 was “I am Generation Equality”: Realizing Women’s Rights.According to the United Nations, the world has made unprecedented advances, but no country has achieved gender equality. I have on skype one of the women who has been bestowed with the responsibility of ensuring that we realise this vision. Anne Githuku-Shongwe is the Representative for UN Women's South Africa Multi-Country Office (SAMCO), which is responsible for women's empowerment and gender equality in Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland and Namibia as well as South Africa, where the office is based.
