The movie continues the story of the previous installment, with Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin) forging an uneasy alliance with Gollum (Andy Serkis) on their way to destroy the Ring. Elsewhere, their friends fight the forces of Saruman (Christopher Lee).
