8th June 2021 - Anniversary of Birth of William John (Bill) Kelly – In Memoriam - New Hymn - Today, the 8th June 2021. Is the birthday of my beloved Father, William John Kelly.. lovingly known as Bill. He was born on the 8th June 1942 in Sydney, during the night when a Japanese submarine off the shore of Bondi beach started shelling parts of Rose Bay - which is located on the harbour side between Bondi and there. This was a short several days after midget subs had bombed parts of the harbor. Dad was born in Rose Bay during that later shelling of the same suburb. (this is an editorial correction to the recorded version) He grew up in Cairns and completed year twelve at Saint Augustine's Marist Brothers College there. Dad met my mother, Tricia at a dance in Brisbane at the legendary Cloudland. Married in 1964 to Trisha Kelly - they had five children - three born in Townsville and two born in Canberra. The family settled back in Brisbane in 1975. Bill was in the Army Reserves in Townsville, Then worked as a civilian in the army in Townsville in supplies. He then worked in the Department of Defence in Canberra for five years 1970-1975 and in the education department in Queensland and then the head of Queensland State Stores and which later was renamed Queensland Purchasing and Sales. He met Queen Elizabeth II twice - first at the opening of Lavarack Barracks in Townsville and later in his capacity of manager of the operations of the Bowls aspects of the 1982 Commonwealth Games in Brisbane. Bill finished his career in Queensland Health - the purchasing and contracting side of the projects. He freelanced as an advisor to health purchasing and supply chains in Fiji and in projects inner southern states before retiring. He was an active member of the Enoggera Catholic Parish and a deeply down to earth member of the Catholic faithful. Bill passed away on the 27th February 2017. Just a few months short of his 75th birthday. He is lovingly remembered by all his family and friends… He would be 79 years old today. . He is greatly missed and will always be in our hearts. He is remembered with love for his faith, integrity and goodness, excellent work ethic, his practical wisdom, insight and intelligence. His consistency and a strong grounding in Christian values. He was also a wonderfully skilled handyman and made many pieces of furniture and made many Improvements around the home. He was an excellent carpenter, and, with my mum, both were very much involved in the building of our homes, as owner builders. Dad, Bill, was always ready and willing to lend a helping hand. He was very clever with computers and could put together a computer from components,.. take them apart and put them back together.. He similarly loved cars and was very knowledgeable in fixing and maintaining cars… He also loved music - He played the piano accordion and piano. Music remained a great solace for him in his final illness! He also composed music. In celebration of the anniversary of his birthday… we will now feature a song composed by William John Kelly… he composed the music and I have set it to lyrics. This particular music was composed by Bill in the late 80’s -the early ’90s. I have set it to the words of Scripture, as a tribute to his memory… Lyrics based on the “Song of Praise of God, by the Three Young Men,” from the Book of Daniel Chapter 3:24-9. Arranged and sung, and with adapted lyrics by Stefan Kelk. First I will play the Hymn and then after that, the instrumental music composed by Bill.
