Another Spring
from Mr Bongo Podcast · host Mr Bongo
Two years since the release of his highly acclaimed debut album Dawn Is A Melody, Finn Rees is back on Mr Bongo with a brand-new single ‘Another Spring’. Part of a forthcoming EP entitled Feel The Sun, ‘Another Spring’ is a Brazilian-inspired, uplifting jazz fusion dancer channelling the fresh energy felt with the dawn of a new season. One of Australia's leading contemporary jazz musicians, Rees has earned a reputation for his masterfully expressive keys playing and genre-blending approach. Going from strength to strength over the past few years, the keyboardist, composer, producer, and beatmaker has been touring far and wide both under his solo project and as one half of dance-focussed duo Close Counters, as well as joining as keys player for many of his contemporaries. Following a collaborative two-track single with SHOLTO last year ‘Another Spring’ is the first taste of Finn’s new solo material. Due for release in October, the Feel The Sun EP is a vibrant and groove-driven celebration of jazz. An ode to our innate ability to channel positive energy from the great force of life through the circular motion of the seasons. ‘Another Spring’ is the first single to be taken from the EP. It starts with echoes of César Camargo Mariano before dropping into a sweeping, orchestrated dancer. The track encapsulates riding the wave of the sun returning, the rush of seasons, remembering to make the moment while you have it. As Finn mentions, “The odd 7/4 time jam (inspired by the great Brazilian group Zimbo Trio) keeps you on your toes moving between a punchy horn motif and the rich string ensemble that lifts you up and carries you. I wanted each layer to have a lyrical quality that nourishes each timbre with a real deliberate forward motion throughout the song.” Imbued with that signature, celestial Finn Rees touch, ‘Another Spring’ is a masterclass in composition and groove, channelling all the hopeful feelings that the fresh light of spring brings. It has a timeless quality that feels as if it could have been a classic spin for Patrick Forge and Gilles Peterson at Dingwall’s, as much as you can imagine it lighting up Shuya Okino’s The Room in Shibuya, Tokyo, today.
