Send us Fan MailSophocles’ Antigone, first performed in Athens around 441 BCE at the City Dionysia, is a tragedy by the Athenian playwright Sophocles (c. 496–406 BCE) and the earliest of his three surviving Theban plays in order of composition, though last in the mythic sequence after Oedipus Rex and Oedipus at Colonus. It dramatizes the immediate aftermath of the war of the Seven Against Thebes, in which Oedipus’s sons Eteocles and Polynices have killed each other; their uncle Creon, now king, forbids burial of the “traitor” Polynices while honoring Eteocles.
